Approximately 300 highly-trained Hobgoblins (a regiment) are charged with the defense of the main gate of the city. They are the ones committed to ensuring that contraband does not enter or leave the city. They train attack dogs that are able to sniff out steel and Elven herbs as well as other items like books, ink and paper.
There is an inner and an outer gate in the city’s massive wall. The wall itself is 30 feet high and over 7 feet thick, and at the main gate there is a 60 foot tower overlooking everything, filled with Hobgoblin crossbowmen.
The outer gate is the iron-reinforced heavy wooden door one would expect with an iron portcullis behind it. Once through the outer entrance, there is an inner portcullis which is kept closed until all those who wish to gain entrance to the city are searched by Hobgoblins and their dogs. Only then are they let through the inner gate and into the city. As they wait, they can see murder holes above them and arrow slits to either side.
